Cricket Lovely Cricket and other songs

Marvellous sport though it is, cricket maybe hasn’t inspired too many songs.

“Victory Calypso – Cricket Lovely Cricket” has to be one of the best, and was inspired by the West Indies first ever test series win against England. For the story: Calypso cricket: “Those little pals of mine”. You can here the song, with lyrics, here:

“Dreadlock Holiday” by 10cc wasn’t really a cricket song, more a sort of story inspired by a holiday in Jamaica, but includes a chorus to a catchy reggae rhythm:

I say
I don’t like cricket (Oh no!)
I love it
I don’t like cricket (No no!)
I love it

[Well, seems I can’t embed the video for this song; you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUNTk5xsxk4]

Then, there’s the way less jolly “When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease” by singer-songwriter Roy Harper. According to this article, “Harper uses the game of cricket as an overwhelming metaphor for death, emphasising this by making it the last track on the album.” Woah!
